Pregnancy FAQs

If I had sex last night and I take a pregnancy test today,
will I know if I am pregnant?

No. The pregnancy test detects a hormone called hCG that is produced after fertilization (sperm meets egg). By the first day of your missed period, hCG can usually be detected by a pregnancy test kit. We offers free tests that are laboratory quality and can usually detect a pregnancy 10 days after sex. We recommend that all results be confirmed with a medical professional. If you would like a test, contact us for an appointment.

My period is late and the condom broke last month – I guess that means I’m pregnant?

Very likely. You need to take a pregnancy test.

I’m taking birth control pills but I missed a few last month. Could I be pregnant?

Yes. Birth control pills are artificial hormones that prevent you from ovulating (producing an egg), but only if taken consistently – at the same time each day. If you miss a dose, your body may produce an egg, and you could become pregnant.

I did a pregnancy test at home and it was negative. Does that mean that I am definitely NOT pregnant?

Not necessarily. If a pregnancy test is taken before your first missed period, there may not be enough hCG for the test to detect.

What are the early symptoms of pregnancy?

  • Missed period
  • Sick to your stomach
  • Breasts tender and sore
  • Feeling extra tired
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Weight change

Not all women experience any or all of these, so you need a pregnancy test to be sure.

I just found out that I’m pregnant. Do I have options?

Yes you do! Making a decision about an unplanned pregnancy can be difficult if you’re not sure of your options. Knowing them allows you to make an informed decision.

  • You may choose abortion – we will discuss abortion procedures, the risks and the outcomes.
  • You may choose adoption – we can help you find out about procedures and potential adoptive families.
  • You may choose to become a parent – we can help you prepare and equip yourself for this role.

At First Step, we can offer a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere for you to share your unique circumstances and your concerns about your options.
